Most tax returns look backwards
Your tax return tells you what has already happened. But many of the financial decisions affecting your tax position were made months earlier. That is why proactive planning matters.
- Before the decisionSale, purchase, pay rise or move. This is when there is most room to plan.
- Tax year end5 April.
- Filing deadline31 January. By then the facts are fixed.
Planning before the decision
Timing, structure and allowances can still be considered, and you can understand the possible tax implications while there may still be room to plan.
By the time a tax return is prepared
- Income has already been received
- Assets may already have been sold
- Director remuneration may already have been paid
- Property transactions may already be complete

- Do not respond to HMRC directly yet. Wait until you have professional advice.
- Do not ignore the letter. There are strict deadlines, and ignoring HMRC makes the situation significantly worse.
- Gather relevant records. The letter usually specifies what HMRC wants to see.

Frequently asked questions
What is tax advisory?
Tax advisory helps you consider the potential tax implications of important financial and business decisions before they happen, rather than after the deadline. Our role is to help identify relevant questions, potential risks and planning opportunities based on your individual circumstances.
Who is IB&Co Tax Advisory for?
Business owners, company directors, individuals and internationally connected clients. You may benefit if you are running a growing business, taking income from a limited company, investing in property, planning to sell an asset, receiving overseas income or moving to or from the UK.
When is the best time to talk to you?
Before the decision, not after the deadline. Many of the decisions that affect your tax position are made months before a tax return is prepared, so an earlier conversation gives more room to plan.
What happens on the first call?
Your first call is a Tax Planning Discovery & Scoping Call. We start by understanding your circumstances and objectives, then identify the areas that may need further consideration. Where detailed tax advice is required, we explain the recommended next steps and engagement process.
Do I need tax advice if my accountant already files my returns?
Not always, but it can help. Filing a return reports what has already happened. Tax advisory looks at important decisions before you make them, so you can understand the possible tax implications while there may still be room to plan.
How are fees agreed?
We quote after the discovery and scoping call, once we understand what you need.
Prefer us to call you?
Leave your details, the service you are interested in and a convenient time, and a member of the IB&Co team will call you back to talk through your circumstances.
If you have received a letter from HMRC, please include the response deadline in your message.
Request a call back
We will call you back at a time that suits you.
Don’t wait for the deadline to start the conversation.
A proactive conversation today could provide greater clarity before your next important financial decision. Bring your latest accounts or tax return and a note of what you want to achieve.
