Residency & International Tax
For internationally mobile individuals and those with overseas income or cross-border interests who want clarity on their UK tax position.
International tax is rarely straightforward
International tax mistakes are rarely deliberate. They often happen because people assume that living or working outside the UK automatically means they no longer have UK tax considerations. Or they assume that income earned overseas is automatically outside the scope of UK taxation. The reality can be more complicated.
IB&Co International Tax Advisory is designed to help internationally connected individuals better understand the tax questions they need to consider. That includes UK tax residency questions and overseas income considerations. Rather than waiting until a tax return or deadline is approaching, the aim is to identify important tax considerations earlier, before key financial decisions are made.
WHO THIS IS FOR
You may need to consider your tax position if you:
- Live between more than one country
- Work overseas
- Have recently moved to or from the UK
- Receive income from another country
- Own overseas property
- Hold investments internationally
- Operate a business across borders
- Spend significant periods outside the UK
- Have become UK resident after a long period living abroad, including UK nationals returning home
What we review
Depending on your circumstances, a review can consider:
- Your UK tax residency position
- How your overseas income and gains are taxed in the UK
- Whether the Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) regime may be relevant to you
- Overseas property and international investments
- The tax implications of a planned move to or from the UK
- Cross-border business interests
What you get
Depending on the scope we agree after your first call, you can expect:
- Identification of the key tax areas for your circumstances
- An initial assessment of risks and planning opportunities
- Priority recommendations and suggested next steps
- Where a detailed review is agreed, structured analysis, professional recommendations and an implementation plan
- Where required, ongoing planning and advisory support
What we do differently
Questions around residency, overseas income and cross-border financial arrangements can be complex, and they often affect each other. We start by understanding where you live, work, earn and hold assets, and what you are planning next. That way, the questions that matter for your situation can be identified and considered together rather than one at a time.
A Proactive Approach
The best time to review your position is before a key decision is made, not when a tax return is due. If you are planning a move to or from the UK, starting work overseas or acquiring property or investments abroad, that is the time to talk.
How it works
Your first call is a Tax Planning Discovery & Scoping Call. The purpose of the initial conversation is to understand your circumstances and determine where IB&Co can provide meaningful advisory support. From there, the process follows five clear steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Possibly. Many people assume that living or working outside the UK means they no longer have UK tax considerations, or that income earned overseas is automatically outside UK tax. The reality can be more complicated.
Your UK tax residency position and how your overseas income and gains will be taxed. If you have become UK resident after a long period living abroad, including UK nationals returning home, the Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) regime may be available for a limited period. It is not automatic: it has to be claimed through Self Assessment, it does not cover every type of overseas income, and claiming it can mean giving up some tax-free allowances. Whether it suits you depends on your circumstances, so it is worth reviewing your position early.
People who live between more than one country, work overseas, have recently moved to or from the UK, receive income from another country, own overseas property, hold investments internationally or operate a business across borders.
Before key financial decisions are made, such as a move to or from the UK, rather than waiting until a tax return or deadline is approaching.
Not always, but it can help. Filing a return reports what has already happened. Tax advisory looks at important decisions before you make them, so you can understand the possible tax implications while there may still be room to plan.
Our Tax Advisory service is designed to complement your existing accounting and compliance work.
