Most tax returns look backwards. Planning looks forward.
Your tax return tells you what has already happened. But many of the financial decisions affecting your tax position were made months earlier.
- Before the decisionSale, purchase, pay rise or move. This is when there is most room to plan.
- Tax year end5 April.
- Filing deadline31 January. By then the facts are fixed.
Planning before the decision
Timing, structure and allowances can still be considered. You see the possible tax effect of each option before you commit.
Reporting after the deadline
By the time a return is prepared, income has already been received, assets may already have been sold and director remuneration may already have been paid.

- We identify the relevant questions, potential risks and planning opportunities
- We explain your options in plain English and what to review next

Prefer us to call you?
Leave your details and the area your question is about, and a member of the IB&Co team will call you back to arrange your 30-minute session.
If you have received a letter from HMRC, please say so in your message and include the response deadline.
Request a call back
We will call you back at a time that suits you.
Received a letter from HMRC? Speak to us before you reply.
You do not have to face HMRC alone. We act as your authorised agent and deal with HMRC on your behalf, from aspect enquiries and VAT or PAYE checks to Code of Practice 8 and 9 investigations and disclosures.
What to do first
- Read the letter carefully and note the HMRC reference number, the officer’s name and the response deadline.
- Do not respond to HMRC directly yet. Wait until you have professional advice.
- Do not ignore the letter. There are strict deadlines, and ignoring HMRC makes the situation significantly worse.
- Gather relevant records. The letter usually specifies what HMRC wants to see.
- Contact IB&Co today.
Time limits for response are often very short. Email hello@ibandco.co.uk (subject “URGENT: HMRC”) or call 020 7164 0225.

Which topics can I bring?
Any of our ten Tax Advisory areas, from director pay and Corporation Tax to property, residency, Inheritance Tax, R&D, SDLT and HMRC enquiries. See the ten areas.
Is it confidential?
Yes, subject to our professional and legal obligations.
What should I prepare?
Bring your latest accounts or tax return and a note of what you want to achieve. Tell us the question when you get in touch so the time is spent on substance.
What if I need more help afterwards?
If your situation needs detailed work, we confirm the scope and agree terms with you before anything starts. There is no obligation to continue.
How is this different from a Discovery & Scoping Call?
The Discovery & Scoping Call is about understanding your circumstances and agreeing the right next step. If you are not sure where to start, request a confidential tax planning review instead.
I have received a letter from HMRC. Is this the right session?
Contact us straight away rather than waiting for a session. Email hello@ibandco.co.uk with the subject “URGENT: HMRC” or call 020 7164 0225.
